Churchill

To be honest, when I was reading the article by Churchill, all I could think was, “This guy is a jerk”. Opinionated as it may sound, he came across as arrogant, disrespectful, and uneducated in how to present an argument so that an audience would take him seriously. Why is he even living in America? He had nothing good to say about us, slamming our government, attacking the present and past Presidents. If he hates the way we operate so much, why doesn’t he take his family and move out of the country? He completely disrespected all Americans who either died or lost someone they loved in the attack of September 11th, saying we had it coming all along. Like somebody said in class, if I knew someone who had died in that attack, I would be livid and extremely hurt. I am sick at the thought that he justifies the loss we suffered.

Churchill presents his views in ways that would make the listener tune him out and disregard everything he says. By belittling his audience, the audience instinctually develops a defensive attitude. There are more tactful ways to present your views than by disrespecting our President and saying we are more concerned with buying our children the latest clothes than with what we are doing to others in Iraq. I understand the compassion he feels for the children in Iraq. Most Americans do. But offending your audience to the point where it just sickens them is not going to make you more persuasive by any means. I doubt many can read this and fully consider what we are doing to the children in Iraq when he is blatantly insulting us left and right.

As far as the issue of him being fired goes, I have to put my distaste for him aside and consider the situation objectively. I do think that he should be protected under the issue of freedom of speech. I think as long as he is not pushing his views on his students, there aren’t really any grounds for firing him. The university’s reputation will surely suffer because his views are so offensive to many people, but I don’t think they can legally fire him for that, can they? I still think it can be compared to the issue of religion in schools. Teachers can practice or not practice whatever religion they like, but they can’t bring it into the schools and force it onto their students. I think the same goes for Churchill and his views on the US government. He can think whatever he likes. As long as he isn’t bringing it into the classroom, I don’t think he should be fired.
