CA and David's presentation
I just wante dto sya that I really enjoyed the presentation that Connelly Anne and David gave yesterday. I thought they made some really great point about violence in sports, the way media handles it, its affects on other sports, and the way the NBA handled the situation.
CA began by asking how many of us saw the incident of the basketball game, and the numerous times it was repeated, but the asked how many of us knew about the speech that was made regarding that incident. I thought it was really interesting to point that out. It emphasizes the things we already know about the media, and showing what they think will get the most attention. I think that people would have been interested, also, to know the NBA's reaction to the incident and hear the speech being given to get that reaction first hand. Those who highly disagreed with what happened also wanted to know what was going to be done to the players, and what types of consequences would be assigned due to these particular actions.
Like Annie said in class, she viewed the basketball brawl and a completely different incidence than what hapopened here between us and USC. I guess it could be seen either way. Even though they were seperate, how much influence did the brawl on the previous day affect how the tigers and gamecocks acted on the field Saturday. I think because there was not a quicker response, such as a speech addressing the incident and punishment to the players, others sports teams thought they could act in the same manner without reparitions. It was not until after the Saturday football game, did the NBA go public with a speech and directly lay out the consequences that the players would suffer.
CA and David brought up a really good point by connecting the two in their speech, in order to show the connection between what one group does, in general, and the way it affects the thoughts of another group (especially with out consequences for their actions). I think it shows the tensions and long standing rivals between certain teams, and what happens when it all gets out of control. Overall, I thought they did a really great job, and they touched on a subject that meant more to us locally because it was our football team, as opposed to things we have been discussing globally. I think it gave a different perspective on an issue that happened right here.
