Weaver - Revisited

I think I should also mention the core of Weaver's rhetorical theory. I just posted a discussion on dialectic and rhetoric. But they both trace back to the core: values, ethics, culture. So here is Weaver, the second and last in a sequel, because he is so long-winded, and because we have to do two postings.

I think his idea of the nature of the human being is interesting. Body, mind, and soul compose this nature. Which is interesting according to the biblical view, which is similar, that there is a mind, body, and soul. Again, Weaver's opinion that the body is self-centered in that it pulls the individual to satisfaction of fleshly kind, lust, fulfillment of sensory pleasure---exactly what the biblical view is. In this, I agree that we gravitate to what the body wants. Personally, I hate the thought of going on to the beach for spring break with this fat roll i have gained over my winter hibernation. YET, the thought of getting up in the morning to run a couple of miles and do crunches to firm my abs gives me nightmares. (see i'm terrified right now). So, i would say I'm in a Catch 22, but I'm not, b/c i'm going to be lazy because my body rules me. So, I guess Weaver is right, the body pulls the invidual down, I'm a loser, moving on...

The mind is composed of 4 faculties. Emotional, ethical, religious, and rational or cognitive. He encompasses all facets of how our minds think. Love and sentiment, right and wrong, our innate desire to worship, and our capacity to learn.

Lastly, the soul is what brings us into unity with our higher selves. There is a level we can achieve within our selves that is a higher plane. Its kind of like, finding yourself. So yeah, pack a mule and go to Africa on safari to find yourself. Or, just figure out how to do it from your dormroom. We need an info-mercial with three easy payments of 39.95 to find yourself, and we'd be millionares. WHY! Its so elusive. And Weaver knows this.

Weaver also makes two statements about humans: We use symbols and we are free agents, creatures of choice. How do you guys feel about this?

One last thing about Weaver before his forgotten, what is the metapysical dream... could we get some help with that one?
