Alden and Maura

Good job Alden and Maura! Alden you could tell you are very passionate about the topic you addressed. Being on the rowing team, you established your ethos well as a female athlete who is being victimized. I think you tore into that kid pretty well, but I do have to say, he does have a right to free speech. As far as his logos being false, that should have been corrected, but his opinion should be allowed to stay. Maura, great topic to address! Anti smoking ads are becoming more and more popular, as they should be, but I had no clue there were still so many pro smoking advertisements out there. Those fruity Caribbean like cigarettes….that is the kind of advertising that would make me want to buy the product, so I think the creators were smart, yet evil, in creating the variety flavors. The prize bribe for UPCs was also an excellent idea. You said most people are too smart to buy into that, but I was very enticed by those neon martini glasses! The ads that did advertise cigarettes definitely were relying on pathos. (Become popular, sexy, stress free, etc… if you smoke.) I was going to say I think their ethos is shot, mainly because we know the hazards of smoking, but when you think about it, it’s not. If people are buying cigarettes because they actually think they will be sexy, they are believing the advertisers to be credible, therefore, ethos is established. (Buying cigarettes because you like them and/or are addicted but you know they will hurt you and not make you cool would not necessarily mean the makers have ethos though.)The antismoking ads are filled with logos, and I think those are some of the smartest ads to make.
