Mobile Homes

Well, once again I am a little behind in blogging. You would think I would start blogging after class when everything is fresh on my mind--I have yet to be that responsible.

I wanted to say that I thought both presentations last week were quite impressive. I found the case study on mobile homes a unique issue to address and something I would have never considered as far as rhetoric is concerned. Rebekah addressed what Americans tend to believe about mobile homes and suggested that despite Americans’ quick tendency to disown them, they did in fact create them. I must admit, I am one of those who fits into the category of those who carry a negative view on mobile homes. Though when I think of South Carolina I do not readily think “state with the larges number of mobile homes,” I do tend to hold little esteem for vast “trailer park” environments. I had never really considered the purpose of the mobile home: “the mobile house for a mobile society.” Rather, I had always thought these homes were merely inexpensive accommodations.

I thought Rebekah’s approach to a could-be touchy subject for some was quite innovative. She addressed a problem but offered positive proposals to not only change a stereotype that has been deeply ingrained in Southern thought but to also change the design of the mobile home in hopes of changing how they are viewed.
