On Desperate Housewives and Censorship
David--
Thank you for not being offended by the cd and for keeping an open mind about it. I'd just like to add that his views aren't always my own and that in handing out the cd, I was only trying to allow people full access to his retoric, even the bad stuff. I included that particular clip for the part where he says, "if you're really pro-life, dont lock arms and block med clinics. Lock arms and block cemetaries." I just thought it was clever. So again, my apologies.
On Desperate Housewives...I admit I've still not watched the show, due to work and such. The things Kevin and Richard have said I agree with. I feel it is the parent's job to monitor the influences their children recieve as much as possible. I know, too, that it is not always possible. Latchkey kids (as I was one of them) often have a few hours here and there when their parents are home in the afternoon or are busy working at home and not able to pay full attention. I feel it's proper to have some regulations on content aimed at children--but on the whole I'm against all forms of censorship. As a free people, we have to be strong enough to choose what we believe and do and let others act the same.
In Modern Perspectives, Weaver's chapter says:
Factors such as climate, geography, religion, race, liturgy, poetry, and mythology contribute to a culture, but a culture is defined largely by the imagination, the spirit, and inward tendencies: "A culture defines itself by crystallizing around...feelings which determine a common attitude toward large phases of experience...They originate in our worldview, in our ultimate vision of what is proper" for humans as higher beings (162).
What does our culture gravitate towards to define what is proper for us? In regards to the PTC, if they are a relatively small group advocating their beliefs in a large way, then the statistics aren't accurate. I think, but have no real grounding for this, that if the whole country--all races, ages, religions, etc--where surveyed, the general consensus would rest at moderate regulation in regard to kids, but no total censorship. Either that or we have a split and are really two or three or eighteen cultures co-existing together. Who knows.
