Response to Melody's Comments on Young's Speech

I completely agree with Melody’s comments about Andrew Young’s speech. First, I must agree that I was not aware of what exactly this commemorative ceremony would entail; overall, however, I did enjoy the presentation. I felt that Young’s speech was one of the most disappointing areas of the ceremony.
Melody says that he fully demonstrated a good understanding and use of the parts of the rhetoric; however, he is unable to pull them together to form a speech that is effective; I couldn’t agree more. I felt that his ethos was very fully established (which is a point on which I think everyone can agree). I also felt that his use of logos and pathos were very good, as I pointed to in my response. The problem was not in his ability to support his point, but rather with his lack of a point to support. Melody points to the purpose of rhetoric as trying to get someone to “decide” something, and I agree that the problem with the speech was that Young does not really lead anyone to determine anything. He expressed the conditions of many different situations but he seemed more to be stating facts rather than using the facts to point to a conclusion.
I also wanted to commend Melody for realizing the disappointment that was left with Young’s final statement. This statement left the audience wishing that he had lead them to that statement, rather than just jumping around and leaving with a brilliant thought.
I felt that Young had a wonderful opportunity to lead Clemson in their attempt to continue the continuity between races; however, he used the chance to discuss his personal feelings on the issues being faced by other countries.
