Sex and Alcohol

I wanted to start off by saying that I found the topics on Tues to be very interesting. When we first began this project, I was thinking about topics that were a less interesting to the class, but you all have inspired me to think of something that more people can directly relate too and something that can provide humor as well. So Good Job on keeping up awake and interested!
Anyway, I agreed with a lot of what Dana had to say about sexuality in the media. I felt that her kairos was right on since teen pregnancy and young sexually active adults is a problem that is plaguing our nation. I also felt that she picked a good topic for her audience, since we are the age group that is supposed to be being targeted by many of these shows. Most of the things shown in her presentation and on TV today are not affecting young adults in the way that they are affecting small children and teenagers. Our age group is more able to separate reality from TV and is able to make intelligent decisions about what to watch, but we are the one supporting these types of shows. We are the age group that only thinks things are funny if they discuss sex or alcohol. We are at the age that we will be having children in the next several years and it is important for us to understand how our children will be receiving the sex in the media. I also feel that she presented a good point of logos, which was later discussed in class, that it is the job of the parent to explain sex in a healthy, positive way to their children. I do not believe that it is the job of the government or anyone else to censor what your children see on TV. It is the job of the PARENT and it is the job of the parent to help the children understand what they do see.
As for CA’s presentation, I also found it very interesting. I am not usually offended by women in alcohol ads; however, some of the ads that CA brought were a little disturbing. I must agree with Annie that despite how distasteful the ads are, they are doing a great job. Alcohol has one of the most lucrative advertising businesses. They focus almost entirely on men. I think that this is for several reasons; first, as CA pointed out, women are not offended by seeing other women while men are generally turned off my seeing other men. Also, men do the majority of alcohol buying (or at least the guys I know). They tend to drink more than women in the first place and tend to buy the alcohol for the women when women do drink. I know that this is not always true but generally at bars, men are buying the drinks and even at liquor stores, the girls will send their boyfriends, husbands, guy friends, etc. to buy the drinks. I think that alcohol ads should not be directed at children, but I feel that it is the parent’s responsibility to teach their children how to handle alcohol responsibility because whether it is through ads, friends, or just life, people will always be exposed to alcohol and children need to know how to handle it.
I think that both on you picked great topics that are very serious, but you both turned them into fun, interesting presentations.
