Ambassador Andrew Young
The commemorative service celebrating the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King was an enlightening experience for me. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to hear from Ambassador Young who worked closely with Dr. King to make changes in our society. Many of Ambassador Youngs statements hit close to home. I've had the opportunity to meet and hear from various people who marched and protested with Dr. King during the civil rights movement but to hear from someone who not only participated but accomplished so much later in his life truly made a difference. I like how Ambassador Young used Dr. King's legacy of non-violence and applied it to life today. His speech basically showed me that simply celebrating Dr. Kings birthday each year is not going to bring about change. However, using this day to show others how we can continuously make a difference will allow us to progress towards Dr. Kings dream. Therefore his remarks about current situations not only in America but around the world provided a new outlook on the state of society. True indeed changes have been made and things are better than they were for Dr. King and other African Americans, however I now begin to question America and its leaders today. As a result I agree with Ambassador Young in his belief that using Dr. Kings vision and tactics of nonvi0lence, teamwork, patience and compassion for all mankind will allow us to live in a better world.
