Emily burns books, Jaqui is taking over the Judicial System
So Emily is out building fires and burning books and Jaquinna is taking over the SC judicial system -- my thoughts? Do it ladies, take it over, do ya'll thang.
Ok, for real. Emily's presentation was on a very important matter. Book banning, censorship, and burning. One thing I must bring to the fore is a local controversy at my high school, Walhalla High School. While, it may be difficult to believe that rural south is only 30 minutes north of clemson, it really is. My family attends a conservative non-denominational church located near my high school where much of the community attends. When students were required to read a novel that involved explicit sexual language, freshman year of high school, parents were outraged and the church stepped in. While I'm unsure if the book should be banned, I really think it shouldn't be required because of the content and nature of the book and parents shouldn't have to let their kids be forced to read something they disagree with -- take off people, I know you guys have comments about that.
Speaking of controversy and banning, get this: On Fox THE 10 oclock news, there was a story about activists in local churches attempting to ban a sex shop of sorts from opening across from an ice-cream shop in Anderson. How is that legal? The activists say they will prevent the store from opening because thier kids go to that ice cream shop and questions would be asked that shouldn't be answered at such young ages. The quality of the city would be degraded. The store would carry lingerie of sorts, costumes probably, and pornography. There is one such sex shop already located out of the city limits, but the activists think they will be able to stop this one from opening. How? Why? Would the business owner all people to prevent his business from opening? Is it any more legal to prevent them from opening than stopping a random Hardees?
Ok, moving on.
Jaquinna.
Very interesting presentation and your ethos was incredible-- you're going into law and this situation is something that closely relates to you and closely affects your future. From your presentation and the info shown, I totally agree with you that the judicial system of south carolina needs more branching out, and racial diversity. What can you do? Start now. Start writing, start speaking, become the voice for this problem in your area. Rhetoric -- you've got all the tools you need. You can make a difference. I believe in you and I believe that when something affects you personally, don't wait on someone else to make a path for you to follow-- blaze a trail. Some people can handle the adversity. If you take on the SC Judicial system by storm, a young college female working toward her future, you can sleep at night knowing that you have changed the system for your colleagues. So, your presentation was engaging b/c you were speaking from your position as a pre-law student. Do it girl, rock it out.
