This weeks insightful presentations :o)
Sex sells, right? Well, that's a pretty undeniable statement (or prevalent misconception) from the presentations we had on alcohol ads and TV based closely around sex and sexy images - esentially evoking that the product will make the user just as sexy as the ads present the situations. Although both presentations were centered around a central theme, I was a bit more offeneded by the alcohol ads than the TV segments. The alcohol ads definately defined what was sexy (what type of women, that is) and also portrayed women in a more negative image than the TV programs did. In the TV programs the men and women seemed to be portryaed in a similar light. Sorry to refer to the Sky ad again, but I think we were all the most disturbed by the obvious implication of dominance over women and the fact that unrealistic beauty is the coveted kind.
Both presenters did a great job with their topics - presenting many aspects. I was really surprised when CA showed her visual of ads she found all in one magazine. Sadly I feel like we have become desensitized to the abounding amount of sex appeal used to sell, promote, and entertain. Looking thorugh a magazine, I don't typically realize there are so many alchol ads. This was the obvious kairos. Both ladies did a good job with representing logos while familirizing their audience with their topics. They both gave definitions, fact, and statistics. I saw the presentations as being both epideictic and deliberative. Epideictic, because they seemed to be putting down these companies and shows for the heavy reliance on sex and the portrayal of women. Although neither explicitly gave a path for the future, or answers for how to change things, I felt like there was a implication that things should change. For both, the pathos laid heavily in the images, commercials, and TV show clips. Some made us laugh, while others were definately offensive. Overall, I though both ladies did a great job and thoroughly examined their topics, along with conveying that to us as a class as well.
Just a quick note. I really enjoyed the presentations on Thursday as well. Jaquinna approached a topic that has been in some form or another an issue for many years. Hence quotas and affirmative action. Minorities and women have been under represented in the work force in almost all fields since they came into the workforce. Melody did a great job as well. This past election was probably one of the most memerable and seemed to have the most mokery made of it. Her showing the political cartoons along with the excersize before she began her presentation made a loud statement. We have all been exposed to these kinds of things, and have been influenced by them in some way or another. The presentations have been great and thoughtful so far. Looking forward to hearing the rest!
