Jaquinna rocks.....and Obama '12
Well, I have to say first that I think Jaquinna is bad**s for picking her topic.
My initial response is that I had no idea that there was a walkout, then, immediately after that, I thought about my lack of surprise that SC has such a bad record because, well, we suck at everything.
As far as what we talked about quotas, I don't know exactly where I stand. I would have to say that I am dogmatically (is that a word) against them. This is because I have a really big problem with someone's heritage playing a part in their life. I hate how in America we talk about being color blind, then we talk about "black on black crime." Why isn't crime simply crime?
Why will it be such a big deal when Barak Obama becomes president (wink wink nudge nudge)? He is an incredible man, more qualified than many people, but in America (where we're color blind) he'll first and foremost be our "President of Color."
Now, I know that Mr. Obama has had a different life from many of us, yet that is largely because America is not color blind. Do you see what I'm saying? So when people say that we are different, I say, sure, we are, but it's only because we say we are. We've created the difference.
That being said, I don't know what I feel about quotas. I'm against them because I don't think there should ever be an issue over someone's race, sex, etc. etc. However, I know that that's not realistically possible, so maybe quotas are necessary right now. I don't know. That's a hard one.
I hope that this isn't perceived wrong. I'm always a little nervous (being a white, middle-class male) writing about race or sex. Essentially, all I want to say is that we're all people, and that's it. The reason there's inequality is because "we" created it. I think things are changing for the better, but it'll take time.
I keep thinking about that poster of the people in the grocery store. There's a black parent with her baby on her back and a white person with her baby on her back and the two babies are reaching towards each other behind the backs of their parents. It says something like "Hate is not innate."
Ben Harper, "How Many Miles Must We March"
"When I was a baby I was not prejudiced
hey how about you
this was something
that I learned in school
something they taught us to do"
