Maura and Alden's Presentations
As always, you guys did a great job on your presentations! I thought that Maura’s was really interesting. I know a lot of people who smoke, including both my parent’s and boyfriend, the thing is, none of them started smoking because of the ads. They only started because of their friends and the attitude associated with it (I know that some would say that this stimulated from the ads, but I believe that mostly it comes from a rebellious idea.) Anyway, this does not downplay Maura’s presentation of the sexuality and cover-ups presented in the cigarette ads. I didn’t really think about the ideas that were being conveyed through the ads until she pointed it out. The ad for Virginia Slims that showed the woman in the bathtub smoking was really odd. I mean, I understand that pathos that the ad is making but no one would really smoke in a bathtub.
Anyway, I think that Maura had good ethos based on her research but also based on the fact that she is subjected to these ads everyday. Also, she presented the lack of logos that is shown in the ads but the large amount of logos that is shown in the “Truth” ads.
I also like Alden’s presentation on Title 9. I am not really into sports but I am aware of Title 9. I did not read the article that was presented in the Tiger but have heard other people express a similar opinion. I personally have never felt that way, but I can understand how some people would. I liked that Alden presented something on which she had so much ethos and was so audience related. Alden used a lot of logos with facts of law and the statistics; and used them to disprove the Tiger article writer’s misconstrued ideas. I also felt that Alden’s presentation was forensic because she was trying to explain what happened when Title 9 was enacted. Her presentation was also epideictic because she was blaming the writer of the article in the Tiger for his lack of knowledge.
