Repsonse to Alden and Maura

Alden: I remember when that article came out. I was sitting in my boring Friday morning class and thinking “does this guy know the crap storm that he is gonna start with this?” Well, I know that many of my female friends were… shall we say agitated by Damon’s comments.

I have had the chance to work with Damon this past year on Student Senate. He is a freshman, as Alden pointed out, and does not know a whole lot about Clemson. (this is very obvious if you came to a Senate meeting to watch). Now, this in no way is a personal attack on him, but I think that he could work on his style and delivery when dealing with people. He has a tendency to be very harsh and abrasive when communicating with others. He’s snapped at me a couple of times with incorrect facts. With that said… moooooooooooooving on!

I liked the fact that Alden has soooo many facts in her presentation. I was really amazed about some of the history of women sports teams here at Clemson and the regulations that the athletic department has to follow to be compliant. I also liked the fact that Alden printed out the article for everyone and allowed us to take some time to read over it before she began her presentation. Alden had many forensic rhetoric examples, logos, ethos, and pathos when analyzing Damon’s article and facts based from the NCAA.

I would have to say that in my personal opinion, Alden’s presentation analyzed and looked in more depth to a speech that also has a problem and a stigma attached to it. Alden, job well done.

Maura: I thought that your presentation was excellent as well: very informative with pictures and examples of the rhetoric of tobacco ads. Your experience as a smoker completely ads to your ethos. You know what you are talking about because you have been there. I liked how you looked at the tobaco companies and their part in all of this. I think the Truth section of your presentation was good also because those ads are very talked about and are popular with some groups. I wanted you to talk a little bit about where Truth gets their money from. I had to find this out on their webpage:
"truth is funded by the American Legacy Foundation - an independent, public health organization created in 1998 as a result of the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA)."

Good luck finding anything on the American Legacy Foundation. So who is really behind the Truth ads, we may never know.

I also think your presentation was excellent because it made me think about tobacco use and the link to advertisements that target certain groups, as you showed in your presentation.
