Thursday’s Presentations

I thought both presentations Thursday were excellent. Everyone seems to be coming up with some unique issues to address! I honestly had no idea that mass book burnings still happened today, nor had I ever thought the rhetoric of such an issue. Very interesting.

I think what made Jaquinna’s presentation on the struggle for diversity among South Carolina judges so distinctive was her personal interest in the subject. Jaquinna said that she wants to be a lawyer and possibly a judge. She desires to know the opportunities to work in these positions will be opened to her. Her presentation started another discussion on the “American Dream” that proved that the ideals we assume to be true about the American are not true. Not everyone has an equal opportunity to obtain the things they would like to have in life. Jaquinna’s personal perspective and experience added a lot to this discussion, and I appreciated her honesty in sharing!

I meant to mention in my presentation that there is a great sense of kairos within the rhetoric of comics. As you can imagine, the effect of this particular type of visual is highly (though not always) dependent upon its timeliness. For example, the Shivo cartoon we watched will possibly not have the same effect years from now as it does presently. The cartoons developed during poignant political issues of present time will not be quite as important to poke fun at in years to come. It is deliberate in the sense that it creates for a "present" audience. Anyway, just thought I’d take the opportunity to point that out.
