Presentations
As always, you all did a wonderful job on your presentations! I really enjoyed Melody’s presentation. I don’t really get into the comic scene but she made several really good points. She brought up the fact that the comic strip medium can be used to convey a great deal to people without putting them on the defense. She used the logos that comic strips have been used for many years and enable people to laugh at themselves and at serious issues, such as politics. I was also surprised that the idea of “visual rhetoric” was recent because it seems so obvious as a form of rhetoric now.
I also really enjoyed Emily’s presentation. I could really relate to her topic because I have rather strong opinions on book banning and censorship. I completely agreed with Emily’s opinion but must congratulate her on her admitting her bias and attempting to make up for it. She provided both sides of the argument and presented both cases well. I was very surprised by the books on the list that she provided and I really feel that the list helped to increase the interest in the topic and the pathos because most people had read several of the books on the list.
Lastly, I was impressed by Jaquinna’s topic. Truthfully, I was not even aware of the walkout that had occurred. I was interested in the topic because I plan to go into law myself and would like to one day become a judge. While I plan to enter the family court scene (which very open to women), I would be upset to think that I lost a position simply because I was a women but I would be just as upset to find that I only received a job because I was a woman. I do not believe in quotas, only in fairness and experience…
Anyway, back to her presentation…I am torn on the issue…I wonder if the number of African American judges really had to do with prejudice or simply with lack of experience or number of people available for the position. This was a difficult issue to tackle but one that is directly affecting the audience. Good Job Everyone!
