Response to Christy and Bonnie
Christy: I personally have never seen DH. My mom thinks it is the most amazing thing on television. Honestly, I do not get a chance to watch a whole lot of television. My usual Sunday night consists of brew from Java City and my usual cubicle on the 5th floor of the library.
I am familiar with the show because ALL of my female friends (and some males) are obsessed with it. There is even a show on the Facebook dedicated to it and it's "lifestyle."
Now, let's talk about lifestyle. Where has our television programming gone? I got a chance to meet NBC Sports Bob Costas last week, and he continually commented about how crude, crass, adn sexually explicit the shows are becoming. I could not agree with him more.
While DH is funny, hip, and trendy, we have to look at the bigger picture: does this mean that all women are desperate for something more? For something under the radar? For a change in the routine? This may be the case in some things like the cooking and cleaning schedule of the house. However, those same changeups should not be applied to marriage and the family structure. I personally have a problem with DH and the aspect of cheating on a husband/boyfriend. To me, showing that on tv and actually flauting it is something that might need to be examined. What are shows like this saying about the ethos of our culture?
Bonnie: I enjoyed the clips in your presentation... you always get the stuff to work in your presentations! Thanks for showing us how to do it too! Along with the previous paragraph, I think that some things on TV have gone a little too far, and one of them is language. Now, I hate the thought of censorship, but what about during the family hour? I read in some of the other blogs asking why parents allow their children to watch inapprpriate stuff on tv. I believe that it is up to the parents to be the ultimate force to determine what their children can see and cannot see. The networks are going to make shows that contain content which will make them money and advertising profits. As long as the advertisers are happy and buying commerical time, the show writers and producers will continue to make shows about subjects on whatever they wish. The true controlling factor in this censorship battle is the advertisers because without their business, the show would have difficulty paying for it's cast, crew, and production.
