Reaction to Ambassador Andrew Young
I felt that the young man who won the oratorical contest gave a much more convincing and debatable speech than did Ambassador Young. While the contest winning speech did sound very practiced and written "by the book," I believe it still upstaged Young's unorganized and "goal-less" speech. While Ambassador Young did make use of the logos, pathos, and ethos types of appeal, he was not using them to lead to any particular goal (or at least not one that I could pinpoint). He was there to honor the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. and to discuss the continuing struggle for peaceful race relations in the United States; however, I felt that he spent most of the speech promoting democracy. He spent a great deal of time discussing the issues of other nations and the United Nations; but, he did not spend much time honoring Dr. King or discussing possible ideas for the future of the United States.
As far as the individual parts of his speech, I felt that he particulary made good use of ethos. He has obviously had a wonderful career leading many in peaceful ways. He had great crediblity and continued to promote his ethos by referring to Jimmy Carter and other credible persons. His ethos was also helped simply by his passion and devotion to the many causes for which he has peacefully fought. The audience was able to see that he truly believed that peace could change things, he was not simply saying this to be pc or proper.
He also made good use of logos, by stating that an army divided can not be successful. He used several examples of this logic, even using sports. He also appealled to the audience by showing how illogical it was to for Rwandans' to kill one another simply because of their height and comparing that to the race struggle in the United States.
In his speech, Young used very little pathos (by which I was suprised). He did tell one story of children eating scraps and watching a department store TV; however, I felt that this story was more used to show the audience that these children would rise up, rather than to envoke pity for the children.
Overall, I was not impressed with the rhetorical ablility of Ambassador Young. I feel that he had the power to deliver a very moving speech, but was hindered by a lack of specific goals. I was not made to think about anything of significance while hearing the speech, however, I feel that perhaps he had a bad night, because he is so otherwise acclaimed.
