Response to Connelly-Anne's Legally Blonde 2 speech
I LOVED Connelly-Anne’s view on the Legally Blonde 2 speech! That was extremely creative and made me want to go back and watch the movie just so I could look at the speech in a critiquing manner this time! The first time I saw the movie, I had no clue what rhetoric was. I thought the speech was just a cute, funny clip made to tie the storyline together. When I go back and try to think about how Elle implements ethos, pathos, and logos, I am really amazed to find that her movie speech contains these real elements of rhetoric. Having not seen the movie in a long time, I can’t cite specific examples of the terms, but from what I remember about the hair cut story, Elle definitely put a humorous spin on her attempt to conquer pathos. Though much of her audience probably could not identify with the whole “not speaking up about a haircut” situation, they could at least put themselves in Elle’s shoes and see how important that would have been to her. They understand the impact that situation made on her and took what she learned about it and shared with them to heart. In terms of ethos, I’m not sure how effective I think it would have been. Most people saw her as a flighty, superficial, pink- loving, ex-sorority girl, not someone who belonged in politics. Though she ends up establishing credibility in the movie, I’m not sure how credible her hair cut story would have made her in real life:( Again, I think Connelly –Anne did an awesome job at picking out this speech to critique. That definitely made my day:)
