Response to Maura and Bono's speech
Although political speeches are enlightening and great to crtique, I really appreciate when nonpolitical figures have inteligent things to say about important issues.
I think Maura did a great job critiquing this particular speech. I agree that the speech contained many specific examples of pathos. The particular example of the father begging Bono to take his child because there was not enough food for the child to survive, is an emotionally touching way for Bono to get across his point that this next generation needs to take the initiative to stop travesties such as this. While the speech is meant to be motivational for the graduating class, it is also deliberative in that it points the young adults in the direction that they should go and the work that they should pursue to acheive.
Bono had ethos, as many famous people do, just for the status of being a star. He however furthured his ethos by the fact that he had traveled and had experienced these issues first hand.
As Maura said, he demonstrted a powerful use of logos as well by stating past struggles that this countryu and those around the world have had to endure.
